Nelson Mandela Square

Nelson Mandela Square, adjoined to Sandton City, celebrates African hospitality and international style. Home to some of South Africa’s finest restaurants, exclusive couture and designer labels and a European-style piazza, Nelson Mandela Square offers chic sophistication, culture and glamour all under the African sun. Formerly known as Sandton Square, Nelson Mandela Square is linked to Sandton City and is one of the most fashionable destinations in Johannesburg, offering more than 60 exclusive shops and boutiques, as well as fine dining experiences and sidewalk cafes.

New York has the Statue of Liberty, Egypt the Great Sphinx and Brazil the Christ the Redeemer statue. And Sandton, South Africa? We have a world-famous statue of the man who led our country to an equal rainbow nation, Nelson Mandela.

Standing six metres tall and weighing 2.5 tons, the bronze Nelson Mandela statue in the Nelson Mandela Square was unveiled on the centre’s 10-year anniversary in March 2003. The unveiling also served as a celebration of 10 years of democracy in South Africa as well as the renaming of the centre from Sandton Square to Nelson Mandela Square.

The Sandton Library and the 5-star Michelangelo Hotel are both located adjoining Nelson Mandela Square.
